What a local leader of education does
The majority of the work of a local leader of education is one to one support of another headteacher.
Typical activities include:
- negotiating objectives for improvement
- coaching and mentoring the headteacher to develop skills, judgement and professional effectiveness
- supporting or arranging coaching or training for staff in the supported school
Each placement is negotiated separately with the relevant local authority, teaching school or other organisation.
Schools that are a priority for support of those where:
- attainment is below the minimum standards
- the school is considered to be vulnerable
- a new, first-time headteacher has been appointed
Support must be focused on:
- school improvement
- the needs of the beneficiary organisation
National Leaders of Education are described by the College of Teaching and Leadership as follows: National leaders of education (NLEs) are strong school leaders, who have experience of effectively supporting schools in challenging circumstances. NLEs work alongside teaching schools and other system leaders to provide high quality support to those who need it most.
If you meet the current eligibility criteria you might want to apply to become a national leader of education. The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) has now introduced a more sophisticated and balanced approach to designating system leaders – one which relies less heavily on Ofsted judgements and more on timely and accurate data, and the skills and track record of those applying.
Together these improvements will help to ensure that more of the most effective school leaders and schools are able to provide high quality support, especially in areas of the country in need of the most support.
